How does a Psychologist differ to a Counsellor or Therapist?

All, to some extent, have undergone education and training in therapeutic techniques to help people address their mental health concerns. The type of education, training and approaches however differ.

Psychologists’ education and training, to a doctorate equivalent level, is informed by behavioural science research, which provides insights into how people with mental health conditions respond to stress and external factors. As such, psychologists are informed by academic literature and psychological research in their assessment processes and provision of treatment.

Throughout their career, psychologists are required to routinely engage in continued professional development (CPD) to remain abreast of current and emerging literature to ensure they are continually adapting their practice to fit with science-supported, best practice approaches.

In practice, this means that a psychologist has in-depth knowledge about the science and academic literature as a basis for their treatment. It also means that psychologists can make mental health diagnosis, if clinically indicated, and a requirement for an onward pathway of care.

Psychologists are required to be registered with the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) who are the regulator of health and care professions in the UK.

At Systemisk, we are all psychologists, trained in additional therapeutic modalities, which means we are able to provide services that combine psychology, counselling and therapy principles as one.

What does Systemisk offer that is different to other psychological therapy services?

Systemisk principles are based on the problem sitting within the systems around the individual, rather than within the individual themselves, therefore our approach reflects an outside to inside approach, working first with the systems around you, to foster a secure and supportive environment first, before looking to build strength and resilience from within.

How do I know what therapy or service is right for me / my family / my organisation?

We offer a free 20 minute consultation to support you in identifying your needs and will subsequently make suggestions and recommendations on the right service for these needs. This is a complimentary service, with no obligation to proceed with Systemisk services if you do not feel we are the right people to help you with your difficulties or requirements.

What happens if Systemisk is unable to help me?

If Systemisk is unable to help you, we will always provide you with options for potential onward pathways of care. You are not alone, and you are cared about.
